Click: Date: 22/07/25

On July 4, a delegation from Beihang University visited the University of São Paulo (USP) and signed an intention letter with the Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation (RCGI-USP) to jointly establish the Beihang USP Green Aviation Laboratory - BUGA-Lab. Professor Julio Romano Meneghini, Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and Director of the RCGI, Professor Hamilton Varela, Dean of São Carlos Institute of Chemistry at USP, Professor Dong Zhuoning, Assistant President of Beihang University and Director of Hangzhou International Innovation Institute (H3I) of Beihang University, and Professor Diao Xungang from Beihang Brazil Center and the School of Energy and Power Engineering at Beihang University signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions. Zhao Changlu, Secretary of the Party Committee of Beihang University, and USP officials attended the signing ceremony.

After the signing ceremony, Zhao Changlu and Julio Romano Meneghini unveiled the plaque of BUGA-Lab. In addition, the two universities jointly held the 1st Brazil-China Workshop on Green Aviation, bringing together more than 30 experts for in-depth discussions on green energy, civil aviation, and mathematical sciences.

The delegation visited scientific research facilities such as the USP Research Center for Greenhouse Gas Innovation and South America's only online vehicle-grade ethanol-to-hydrogen production and refueling demonstration station.

BUGA-Lab marks another significant milestone in the long-standing, close and productive cooperation between Beihang University and USP in green aviation energy. Moving forward, the laboratory will leverage advantageous resources of Beihang Brazil Center, Beihang Innovation Institute in Brazil, and USP to develop green aviation energy and carry out substantive cooperation in double degree programs, joint scientific research projects, high-level academic conferences, and faculty exchanges and visits. BUGA-Lab will become the first China-Brazil joint laboratory established by Beihang Brazil Center in Hangzhou, while green aviation will become the center's development priority to promote scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges between China and Brazil.

Professor Hamilton Varela personally designed the visual identity of BUGA-Lab. The laboratory adopts a joint management model between China and Brazil, with Julio Romano Meneghini and Hamilton Varela serving as the Brazilian coordinators, and Professor Diao Xungang and Professor Qiu Lu, Vice Dean of the School of Energy and Power Engineering, serving as the Chinese coordinators.
