(Text and photo by Su Di) On April 9, Enrico Zio, an IEEE Fellow, former Chairman of the European Safety and Reliability Association (ESRA), and Professor at Politecnico di Milano in Italy, visited the Hangzhou International Campus of Beihang University by invitation. During his visit, he attended the unveiling ceremony of the Sino-Italian Joint Research Laboratory on Prognostics and Health Management for Intelligent Maintenance. He also signed a memorandum of cooperation for the laboratory with Professor Kang Rui, Chief Scientist of the Smart Aviation Center (SAC) of the Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University (H3I).
After the unveiling ceremony, Professor Enrico Zio gave an academic lecture titled Artificial Intelligence for System Reliability and Safety. In the lecture, he discussed the contribution of artificial intelligence (AI) to system reliability analysis and risk assessment. He also explained how the industry could leverage AI to support analysis and decision-making. Additionally, he elaborated on the challenges and solutions related to technologies, such as natural language processing, meta learning, and digital twins, in system reliability analysis and risk assessment. Finally, he shared potential issues and research directions for future development.
The lecture attracted a large audience of faculty members and students, who listened attentively and took careful notes. During the Q&A session, the attendees asked questions actively. With his solid and extensive professional knowledge and profound insights into the development of AI + reliability technology, Professor Enrico Zio provided professional and thorough answers.
After the lecture, Professor Enrico Zio visited the Sino-Italian Joint Research Laboratory on Prognostics and Health Management for Intelligent Maintenance. At the laboratory, he obtained a comprehensive understanding of the aircraft-level PHM virtual simulation experiment platform and the component-level PHM physics experiment platform for aviation equipment.
Dedicated to collaborative innovations for a shared future, SAC will further deepen international educational cooperation with Professor Enrico Zio in areas such as PhD short-term schools and graduate-level course development. This partnership aims to promote the internationalization and digital-intelligent transformation of aviation education and to cultivate more innovative and practice-oriented professionals for the civil aviation industry.
