(Written and Photographed by Zhong Hao, Mo Fangli, Chen Ye, and Fu Lihua) As the wind carries away the summer heat and brings autumn blessings, Beihang Hangzhou International Campus welcomes a group of vibrant new faces. With the French language training camp and military training entering their final countdown, the 2024-2025 fall semester is about to begin. A new chapter is waiting for us to write! Let us walk side by side, open new pages, embark on new journeys and paint new pictures, striving to become the best versions of ourselves. H3I is ready!

In-depth Focus on Talent Development

On July 3 and August 21, H3I participated in the special defense sessions of Beihang University’s training program review meetings, addressing the 2024 undergraduate training program and the revised 2023 undergraduate training program. H3I’s undergraduate program is based on Beihang’s “Four Strengths Training” model and draws from the French engineering education system, which is closely integrated with French educational practices. The program reflects H3I’s distinctive features of “interdisciplinary integration”, “industry-education cooperation”, and “internationalization”, aiming to build a training system for internationally outstanding engineers that combines and is mutually recognized by both Chinese and Western educational systems. The goal is to cultivate international engineers and cutting-edge innovative talents with solid theoretical knowledge, strong skills, creative thinking, and a global perspective.

For the 2024-2025 fall semester, H3I, in collaboration with various Beihang schools, is offering 34 graduate-level courses for the first time. These include 2 ideological and political courses, 7 mathematics and physics courses, and 25 core professional courses.

In addition, to fully leverage the specialized features of each research platform, H3I will launch 29 experimental and practical courses for the first time. To ensure the courses’ scientific rigor, forward-thinking approach, and practical applicability, H3I completed a series of preparatory steps before launching them. These included submitting applications for new courses, review, revision and defense sessions of syllabi, and trial lectures. The courses contents are rich and focus on cutting-edge technologies, emphasizing interdisciplinary integration and practical teaching. The aim is to enhance students’ practical skills, innovative thinking, and research capabilities.

Graduate Experimental and Practical Course Trial Lectures

During the summer, H3I completed the scheduling for all undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students and released the “2024-2025 Graduate Course Selection Guide for the First Semester.” This guide provides a detailed course list for the fall semester, helping students in the Hangzhou campus to select their courses for the new term.

Strengthening Faculty Resources

To ensure smooth and steady progress in teaching, H3I continued its faculty recruitment efforts, focusing on public foundational courses like FLE, English, and physical education. Over seven rounds, 45 faculty resumés were reviewed, with experts conducting interviews and evaluating qualifications. At the start of the new semester, 24 new teachers, including 14 foreign teachers, joined various course groups. A faculty team of language, foundational mathematics and physics, and sports featuring internationality and professionalism has been built to meet students' diverse needs and promote their overall development.

Welcoming International Faculty to H3I

The foundational training for young teachers is a crucial part of Beihang University’s teaching admission system. This training is designed to cultivate basic teaching skills, guide teachers in pursuing excellence in education, and enhance the overall quality of talent development at the university. It plays a vital role in helping young educators systematically understand teaching, improve their teaching abilities, and contribute to Beihang’s mission of fostering high-quality education. On August 19, H3I held its third foundational training session for 15 teachers, covering both undergraduate and graduate courses.

Before the start of the semester, several meetings were organized with faculty from the FLE, mathematics, physics, English, and physical education departments to discuss how to enhance teaching skills, improve classroom quality, and strengthen teaching management. The faculty exchanged views on teaching methods, student interaction, classroom dynamics, and management, offering constructive suggestions.

Course Group Discussions

Accelerating Platform Development

To speed up the development of experimental teaching platforms, H3I organized its second project review meeting for 2024 on August 21. Five distinguished experts were invited: Professor Xu Ping, a member of the Ministry of Education’s University Physics Curriculum Advisory Committee and Deputy Director of the Experimental Special Committee, as well as Director of Beihang University’s Physics Teaching and Experiment Center; Professor Wang Jun, Dean of Beihang International Innovation Institute (Hangzhou); Professor Zhao Huijie from Beihang’s School of Instrumentation and Optoelectronic Engineering; Professor Wang Yewu, Director of Zhejiang University’s Physics Teaching and Experiment Center; and Researcher Ma Yaoguang, Associate Dean of Zhejiang University’s College of Optical Science and Engineering. The experts reviewed proposals for experimental courses in physics and optics, fully endorsing the plans for teaching instruments and offering valuable insights into course implementation, teaching innovation, and the integration of science and education.

Project Review Meeting

H3I continues to advance the renovation and equipment installation for the Industrial Science Laboratory, which has already supported major events like the campus open day. On September 4, 2024 freshmen from the Zhongfa Aviation Institute visited the laboratory, eager to begin their upcoming industrial science experiments.

The laboratory will further deepen its cooperation with the French Industrial Science and Technology Teacher Alliance to create a forward-looking, internationally integrated experimental course system with Chinese characteristics. This will extend its impact on local schools and contribute to the comprehensive training of top-tier engineers in China.

Industrial Science Laboratory in Action

As a pioneer in educational innovation, H3I stands at a new starting point, ready to explore new paths for cultivating international engineers and continuing its mission to foster globally competitive talent.
