On the afternoon of September 5th, the first lesson of the "Master Series Course" at Zhongfa Aviation Institute of Beihang University was held! The Institute specially invited Fang Jiancheng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and expert in navigation guidance and control, to give a special lecture, “Carry Forward Beihang Spirit, Inherit the Ambition to Serve the Country in Aerospace”, for the 2023 undergraduate freshman. This lecture was hosted by Hong Guanxin, Director of Zhongfa Aviation Institute.
Fang Jiancheng: Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, professor, Director of Academic Committee of Beihang University, chief scientist and designer of “scientific facilities for ultrasensitive measurement of magnetic field and inertial rotation” national major science and technology infrastructure, director of the Strategic Research Committee of Hangzhou Bay Comprehensive National Science Center. Academician Fang Jiancheng has long been engaged in the research of inertial positioning and navigation, quantum precision measurement and sensing, ultra-weak magnetic field measurement and medical application. He has won a first prize and a second prize of the State Technological Invention Award as well as a second prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award and National Teaching Achievement Award. Additionally, he was awarded the first National Defense Science and Technology Industry Outstanding Talent Award, the National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talent and Science and Technology Prize of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation.
Academician Fang Jiancheng extended a warm welcome to the first inaugural batch of students at Zhongfa Aviation Institute of Beihang University and expressed his heartfelt congratulations to them for choosing Beihang and becoming a new generation of “Beihang people”. His talk, themed "Beihang Spirit and Ambition", started with the history of Beihang University. He used humorous and witty language and vivid stories to describe the persistence and hard work of thr pioneers during the early days of Beihang University. This part of history illustrated Beihang people’s ambition and responsibility of serving the country in aerospace and Beihang's remarkable achievements in serving national strategic needs and undertaking major national science and technology projects. He highlighted that generations of Beihang people have inherited their predecessors’ ambition of serving the country in aerospace and courage to shoulder the responsibility to forge ahead and innovate. “Dear students, several academicians are among the first generation of Beihang people. As the first generation of Zhongfa Aviation Institute, you will be the future of the Institute!” The plain language carries Academician Fang Jiancheng's ardent hopes for the new students.
Academician Fang Jiancheng then reviewed the story of leading his team in Beihang to land and take root in Zhejiang and contribute to the development of Zhejiang. He also introduced the world's top "zero magnetic" field with best performance and largest space to be built in the future, as well as the major research direction from "zero magnetism" to "geomagnetism". Academician Fang Jiancheng said that, in order to achieve a leading position in science and technology, it is crucial to prioritize basic research during the exploration stage. We must continuously strengthen our original innovation capability, and be open to try, to break through, and to seek new solutions paths. Three generations of Beihang “gyro scientists” were committed to the “eternal gyro spirit” and work hard with the research on gyroscope for it to happen and progress, constantly narrowing the gap with counterparts. "The gap now is five years’ progress. With all your efforts, we believe we will eventually catch up with or even surpass other foreign countries. Do you agree with me?" These passionate words ignited the dream of becoming a powerful nation through science and technology in the hearts of all students!
Finally, Academician Fang Jiancheng delivered a message to the new students. He encouraged them to inherit the ambition of their predecessors to serve the country in aerospace, study hard, seize opportunities to showcase their talents, and make their own contributions to serving the country's major strategic needs and promoting technological innovation and development. “Dear student, you must keep your identity in mind. You are students of Beihang University. You must serve the needs of the country. You must be the new generation of Beihang people.” The students were all deeply inspired, and the applause lasted for a long time.

This lecture marked the beginning of the special lecture called the “Master Series Course” at Zhongfa Aviation Institute of Beihang University.
