Team Led by Professor Huang Di from BCC Lab Selected for CNC Representative Research Project for 2025

Artemis: An AI-Enhanced Approach to Waste Sorting and Decarbonization, a project jointly applied by members of Beihang-Centrale Group Joint Lab on Carbon Neutralization (BCC Lab) - Professor HUANG Di from the School of Computer Science and Engineering at Beihang University and Professor Liming CHEN from École Centrale de Lyon – was selected for the Sino-French Research Partner Exchange Program 2025 (or China-France Hubert Curien Partnership Program, Cai Yuanpei Project in France). It was also listed as a representative research project in the cooperation framework of Centre Neutralité Carbone franco-chinois (CNC) for 2025.

The project focuses on carbon neutrality technology deeply empowered by artificial intelligence. In combination with robots and other intelligent carriers, it aims to optimize waste disposal and thereby contribute to the accomplishment of low-carbon goals. The main research tasks include the development of efficient waste classification methods, automated disposal processes, and fine-grained carbon footprint assessments, with distinctive features in technological innovation and application prospects. The project is expected to advance the deep integration of artificial intelligence and carbon neutrality, providing important references for China and France to combat global climate change and promote green development.

China and France have a solid foundation for cooperation. Professor Huang Di, the Chinese team leader, has long been engaged in research in computer vision and machine learning, while Professor Liming Chen, the French team leader, is dedicated to robot simulation and autonomous decision-making. At the 1st Sino-French Carbon Neutrality Seminar hosted by the Sino-French Engineer School of Beihang University (Centrale Pékin) in November 2023, the two parties jointly showcased the intelligent robotic manipulation technology and its application in environmental protection. The approval of this project reflects the deepening partnership between the two parties and is a concrete step in fulfilling the commitment to Sino-French scientific research cooperation.

About the Sino-French Research Partner Exchange Program

Established by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in April 2023, the Sino-French Research Partner Exchange Program aims to promote exchanges and cooperation between the two countries’ research teams and advance mutual development in science and technology. This year, the program is soliciting 15 projects for funding across all scientific and technological fields. Among these, five projects focus on carbon neutrality.

About BCC Lab

BCC Lab is an important initiative launched by Beihang University and Le Groupe des Ecoles Centrales in response to the consensus between the two heads of state and the Sino-French Joint Statement in 2023. It is of great significance for promoting cooperation, fostering technological innovation and application, and training technicians in carbon neutrality. On September 3, 2024, the laboratory was officially inaugurated at the Hangzhou International Campus of Beihang University.

About CNC

Established by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in April 2023, CNC is an important platform for deepening cooperation between the two countries in carbon neutrality. Through the Sino-French Research Partner Exchange Program, the center supports scientific research in areas such as green development and low-carbon technology innovation.
